Derny, Marcel (1914-2003) – Bronze sculpture of a “Babouin” (baboon) – Ed.: Deroyaume, 1955 (5/8). Height: 30 cm.
Until the age of six, Derny grew up in Sarthe (just south of Le Mans) and developed a great interest in drawing animals he saw in his surroundings. At a young age, he left for Algeria where he learned to work with clay. As a 14-year-old in 1928, he participated in an exhibition of Orientalists in Algiers. He developed his talent and had a keen eye for observing and modeling wild animals. After graduating from the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs, he began his career at the Manufacture de Sèvres, for which he designed a large number of models. His work is held in the Musée Ceramique de Sèvres, the Musée des années trente in Boulogne Billancourt (Paris), the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (Paris), and the Musée La Piscine in Roubaix, among others.
